Reiki is a form of hands-on energetic healing that utilizes universal, life-force energy for personal revitalization and balance. Transcending any cultural boundaries that divide mind, body, and spirit, Reiki healing takes place on all levels of the individual.
Reiki – or “Universal Life-Force Energy” - is performed by practitioners who have undergone one or more attunements that awaken the practitioner’s innate healing ability with the hopes of becoming a Reik master. Reiki practitioners can trace their lineage through their teachers to the tradition’s beginning in 1922 with the Japanese Buddhist monk, Mikao Usui.
A Reiki practitioner does not generate any new or personal energy when performing Reiki sessions, but instead acts as a conductor or channel of universal life-force energy. Reiki is guided by the universal life-force, adjusting itself to the needs and abilities of the recipient. It raises the vibration of blocked, weak, or non-serving energy in order to loosen, reprogram, and transform it into balanced energy that is right for the individual.
As an activator, releaser and transformer of energy, Reiki is completely holistic. Reiki healing can be used for relieving pain, cleansing the body, and revitalizing stamina. Reiki can also reduce bleeding, bruising, swelling, and blistering, while repairing and soothing damaged tissues, organs, and any trauma carried in the body’s cells. Although it can be used for “spot” and symptom treatments (like burns, headaches, cuts or bruises), Reiki heals at the very source of an injury or illness. In supporting the release and clearing of emotions, painful memories, and harmful thought patterns, Reiki facilitates stress reduction, relaxation, and general well-being.
Reiki practitioners are not qualified to diagnose or administer conventional medical treatment. However, Reiki does not conflict with any medical procedures, medication, or surgery and can effectively be used as a complimentary therapy.
Reiki is not a religion or a belief system, nor does it have a creed or doctrine. Reiki is wholly transformative, arousing spiritual consciousness and promoting awareness, creativity, and intuition by awakening the practitioner and recipient to a unifying energy force.
What to Expect from a Treatment
Before a treatment, your therapist will conduct a brief consultation to discern any known medical issues, areas of concern, or general intentions that you may have.
A Reiki treatment typically lasts between 50 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the needs of the individual. The recipient remains fully clothed and rests comfortably on a massage table or in a chair. The practitioner then places his or her hands in a series of positions on or above the recipient’s body, activating the Reiki energy to facilitate your own self-healing.
During a treatment, the recipient may experience warmth, cold, tingling, pulsing, or general calmness in isolated locations or all over the body. Most often, the therapist's hands become extremely warm due to the increased energy flow. In rare occasions, a recipient may experience discomfort – either physically or emotionally. This does not mean that something is “wrong,” but instead may indicate an area of sensitivity or blocked energy that is receiving extra Reiki healing. In these instances, communication is essential between the recipient and the practitioner to reduce discomfort and minimize any stress, fear, or anxiety that the discomfort may be causing.
During a treatment, both silence and talking are perfectly acceptable. Recipients are encouraged to share any sensations, emotions, thoughts or concerns they may have – either during or after a treatment.
Through gentle touch and spiritual inquiry, this unique approach to energy healing honors and nurtures the whole person by fostering a safe space for self-expression and active participation in your own healing process.
