The various disciplines of therapeutic body work require the study of many different and highly complex biological, anatomical, and mechanical systems: the nervous system, the musculoskeletal, the organ system, the endocrine, the immune system, and more. But ultimately, the body is not merely a cluster of independently working "parts." Rather, it is the symphony of a living being, with harmonies, rhythms, and tempos — some subtle, others bold — created by a vast network of anatomical and physiological relationships. The human body is far, far greater than the sum of its parts.

In that spirit, the Boulder Bodyworks team is greater than the sum of its parts. Each member not only works closely with the client, but with other practioners as well — conferring, recommending, taking different approaches to achieve the body's natural homeostatic balance. Our biographies speak for themselves. Our collective experience and education is unrivaled in the industry, as you can tell by our formal training and certifications.

Bodywork approaches the body both globally and locally. We believe it entails a marriage of the theories, observations, and proofs of science, with the passion, inspiration, and creative energy of art. It is a dance, a dialogue with which we meet the body where it is and help it to move to the next level. Bodywork is the term for the place where Science and Art meet, blend, and become one. Let our substantial expertise and talent work for you.

Kelly Athey - Certified Pilates Instructor Kelly Athey - Certified Pilates Instructor Kelly's instruction style is a culmination of 30 years experience in multiple aspects of the fitness industry, including teaching dance and teaching Pilates. She was introduced to Pilates while studying dance in pursuit of her BFA at San Francisco State. Realizing the benefits of the technique, Kelly has incorporated it in all of her work, whether teaching dance, instructing as a certified personal trainer or teaching as a certified kickboxing, step and cycling instructor. Her energy in the past seven years has been mainly focused on teaching Pilates. The lifestyle of Colorado brought Kelly here where she pursued her Pilates certification. She has owned her own dance studio, been artistic director for a performing arts school for children and designed dance and arts programs for a children's dance company working with marginalized underprivileged at risk children.

Kelly's philosophy is that Pilates offers a bridge between mind and body, between everyday life and optimal performance, and between rehabilitation and healthy movement. She believes Pilates is for anyone and everyone and when used to its fullest potential can enhance every aspect of one's life.

Kevin Riddle
Kevin Riddle, CMT specializes in pain management and therapeutic deep tissue release drawing upon experience and training across a wide variety of techniques and modalities. He graduated from the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts in 2005 and is a nationally certified massage therapist (NCBTMB). He is also licensed as a therapist and massage therapy instructor in New Mexico. He is deeply committed to facilitating a journey—a return to health and balance—in his clients. To this end he has trained with some of the leaders on the cutting edge of the CAMs (complimentary and alternative medicines) including Tom Meyers (Anatomy Trains), the Barral Institute (Visceral Manipulation) and is currently training in the craniosacral biodynamic approach to health and healing.

The process of good therapeutic bodywork creates an awakening—a remembering—the body can then follow back to its inherent midline or balance. As an instructor, Kevin believes deeply that intuitive and responsive listening to the tissues of the human body is immeasurably enhanced by an exploration and understanding of anatomy and physiology. This knowledge informs intuition and imbues his touch with specificity and skillful means. The ability to listen and respond with specificity is skillful means, and it is this that enables Kevin to catalyze the body’s return to balance and health.

Kevin grew up in Oregon and spent much of his time on the peaks of the Cascade range. He first moved to Colorado in 1990 and spent 8 years living and teaching skiing in Crested Butte, CO. He is still at home in the outdoors. He mountain bikes, climbs, slacklines, skis, hikes and occasionally can be found standing still with mouth open, utterly awestruck by the ineffable beauty and mystery of the world surrounding him!

He has travelled to Nepal, Japan and India. He is looking forward to further explorations of mind-body-spirit when he begins graduate studies at Naropa University in the fall. He is committed to being part of a deep and profound paradigm shift that is occurring around health and healing in this county; and he is committed to deepening our expressions of the extraordinary potential we share for health and regeneration in our mind, body and spirits.
David B. Schwartz, CMT, CNMT
David B. Schwartz, CMT, CNMT, DOMP (cand), holds that the structure of the body dictates its function. He is committed to a detailed and methodical understanding of the architecture of the human anatomy and physiology. David uses a variety of techniques in his work to influence the body's structure; promoting fluid transit, releasing restrictions, and dialoging with the tissues of the body in order to enhance its self-healing, self-regulating mechanisms. He sees our body as a vessel for the human spirit, imprinted with the stories of our lifetime. David is currently a thesis writer at the Canadian College of Osteopathy in Toronto, Ontario and maintains an active manual therapy practice in Boulder, CO.
Mia Upton
Mia UptonCMT, is a Colorado native and has been an avid athlete her whole life, devoted to dance, skiing, motocross, and equestrianism.  Mia’s goal is to use bodywork to kindle a self-knowledge inherent in all of us.  Her intent is to provide high quality therapeutic massage to individuals experiencing pain or discomfort due to injury, emotional stress, improper biomechanics, poor posture, or congenital dysfunctions, and to assist them in their healing process by utilizing her knowledge of advanced rehabilitation and relaxation techniques as a tool to facilitate that undertaking.  Mia graduated from the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (BCMT) in 2003, and has maintained a diverse practice ever since, working in Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Colorado and Canada.  Her ability to sink gently through the layers to arrive at the center of the tissues without invoking the resistive defenses of the body allow her to penetrate deeply into tired, aching muscles and relieve dysfunction causing tension at its core.
